Girl child rights advocate wins global award

Director for Shamwari YeMwanasikana Ekenia Chifamba has won a Prestigious Global Award for Humanitarian Impact due to her advocacy for girls’ and young women’s rights.

Chifamba won the Prestigious Global Award for Humanitarian Impact courtesy of the Women Changing the World Awards.

“I am happy to receive this award, and it’s such an honour to be recognised as outstanding amongst other key and well-known players in this sector globally.

“I have realised that the work that I do is important.

“It is a calling for me, changing and touching the lives of young women and girls is not about numbers.

“It’s one girl at a time. If we impact her differently, whether we have raised awareness, provided services, we have given them capacity around key areas.

“For me, it has been a journey, from 10 years ago, the impact we have made, those who have gone to school, teen mothers, those who have managed to start their own, and women who have been empowered.”

Chifamba said, there has been the creation of safe spaces for young women.

“It has been about our advocacy towards the marriage act, national action plan on ending human trafficking, the age of consent, and how we are pushing toward implementation of SHRC.

“It has been about having a team and stakeholders who supported us at different levels.

“The award for all those girls and a pride for Zimbabwe.”
