Zimbabwe Table Soccer(Foosball) Association will host Ghana for an international friendly match from August 10-12.
The team from Ghana is expected to arrive today at the Robert Mugabe International Airport.
Foosball which is popularly known as slug has been one of the major entertaining games at various shopping centres across the country since the country got its Independence years ago.
Zimbabwe Table Soccer Association (ZTSA) president Coxwell Chigwanha said the match is more than just a sporting event – it’s a celebration of historic ties between the two nations.
The country’s top five players Douglas Matambanashe, Richard Choto, Luka Ngwarati, Noel Justin, and Sonny Sivare are expected to represent Zimbabwe at the tournament.
Table soccer has been played as a professional game in Zimbabwe for the past few years now.
In an interview, Chigwanha said this visit is expected to pave the way for future sports exchanges.
“The visit by Ghana will ensure that some of our players are ranked in Africa and the world. “By defeating Ghana, Zimbabwe will become one of the top ten best table soccer playing country in Africa.
“We are also laying a foundation to launch our bid to host the 2026 Africa Table Soccer Championship in line with our country’s sport and tourism strategic vision
“This event is being hosted in the month of our national heroes which is historic as Zimbabwe and Ghana share very important strategic historical ties.
“This is the country that horned and consolidated the political experiences of our founding father the late Cde Mugabe where he interacted heavily with the late Kwameh Nkurumah.
“Secondly Ghana is an African powerhouse in table Soccer so this visit will be a precursor of future visits by other nations cementing Zimbabwe as a safe and hospital destination,” he said.
The origins of table soccer are a bit of a mystery.
According to some reports, similar style games emerged around Europe in the 1890s and early 1900s, just as real soccer was becoming formalized into clubs and leagues.
