A Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management (ZimParks) ranger died after succumbed to injuries following an attack by a rhino.
The incident occurred in the Savé Valley Conservancy on June 9, after Knowledge Mudzimureka, was attacked while on a patrol.
ZimParks Head of Corporate Communications Tinashe Farawo, confirmed in a statement.
“It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Knowledge Mudzimureka, a dedicated and valued member of our anti-poaching and wildlife monitoring team.
“Knowledge tragically succumbed to severe injuries he sustained on May 26.
“He passed away on Sunday, June 8, in the afternoon, after a two-week valiant fight for his life.
“On May 26, Knowledge, accompanied by another ranger, was on a routine patrol, tracking a different rhino, when they unexpectedly encountered a mother black rhino and her calf.”
According to the statement, the rhino cow severely injured Knowledge, who sustained wounds to his abdomen, particularly his left lung, as well as to his head, shoulder, and knee.
“Knowledge was immediately evacuated on an ACE Air Ambulance and received exceptional care from the medical team at a private hospital in Harare.
“He underwent two serious operations; on arrival to stabilise him, and a subsequent procedure to address a critical infection in his lungs.
“Knowledge had started to turn a corner, and the doctors were expressing optimism and positivity, his passing has shocked our entire community with grief.
“The burial service for Knowledge will be held on Wednesday, 11th June 2025, to honour his life and immense contribution.”
