Suspect who escaped from lawful custody, arrested

An armed robbery suspect, Luke Zinyengere (29), who escaped from lawful police custody while armed with a revolver, has been arrested.

Police confirmed in a statement that Luke escaped from Harare Magistrates’ Court on March 22.
National police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed that four other individuals have also been arrested for allegedly aiding Zinyengere’s escape.
These include his younger brother, Tatenda (19), Kelvin Chinganga (31), Siphelile Zinyengere, and Obey Rwaendepi (28).
“Preliminary investigations by the Police revealed that Luke Zinyengere’s young brother, Tatenda Zinyengere, allegedly provided the revolver pistol which was used to escape from custody and rob Tinashe Chiyamuro of his Mazda Demio vehicle.
“Zinyengere abandoned the stolen vehicle along Kaguvi Street in Harare before reuniting with his accomplices, who reportedly attempted to facilitate his escape to a neighbouring country.”
Commissioner Nyathi warned the public against sheltering criminals.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police warns the public against harbouring criminals, thereby defeating or obstructing the course of justice in the country,” he said.
He also urged members of the public to report any criminal activities.
