…threatens to withdraw her scholarship
A senior manager with Old Mutual reportedly raped a student on scholarship twice without protection before intimidating her that she would lose her scholarship if she report the incident.
Musa Nyasha Dube Manyika raped a student from the University of Zimbabwe.
The matter appeared before Harare Magistrates’ Court where he was granted free bail after the State did not oppose it.
He is expected back in court on November 8 (Friday).
The case is under CRB HRE 1529/24 for rape.
The matter appeared before Harare Magistrates’ Court when he was granted bail with no conditions after both the police and State did not oppose bail for this offence.
Musa is the manager for Business Development at Old Mutual while the student is in her third-year semester and is currently working daily with the accused as she is on attachment.
She started her undergraduate in 2022 under the Old Mutual Scholarship and while she was at the University of Zimbabwe sometime in November 2022, she was introduced Manyika.
He was part of the Scholarship Committee and he later sent a message on a Sunday evening in November 2022 as he wanted her to assist him in packing some banners at Old Mutual Gardens.
Allegations are that he went to pick her up from the university campus and went to his office where they packed the banners.
It is further alleged that after finishing packing the banners, he pushed her to the wall but she tried to fight back and screamed but no one came to her rescue.
Further allegations are that, he then pushed her on his table before pulling off her dress, skin tight and pant to the knee level.
He allegedly removed his shorts to the knee level and raped her without protection.
Manyika apologised but threatened her that she would lose her scholarship if she was to tell anyone about the incident.
He allegedly gave the victim a branded Old Mutual bag, a juice bottle, and a cap.
According to the State papers, she was afraid to report the matter since she was afraid to lose her scholarship.
She reported the sexual assault and was given some medication at the campus clinic.
According to the allegations, on June 19, this year, when she started her attachment at Old Mutual, Manyika called her and he told her that he wanted to have a career conversation.
They had a conversation for close to an hour while in his car and she pleaded to leave since she had curfew.
It is also alleged that he then offered to drive her home but instead of stopping at their gate, he proceeded to another road where he adjusted the car seat where she was seated.
He then allegedly raped her without protection before she started crying.
The complainant was afraid to report him to the police.
She then went to Parirenyatwa Adult Rape Clinic and was assisted and also went to see a gynecologist and she was told that her cervix was inflamed.
Reports are that he would always say, he was sorry and promised to support her.
In October, the accused, sent her money for medication and promised to support her if she kept the abuse a secret.
On October 11, she got the courage and opened up the case to her immediate managers before the case was reported at Marlborough Police Station.
