The UNDP, in collaboration with ZIMRA, has launched a Taxpayer Education Campaign to support SDGs.
The initiative is aimed at enhancing media understanding and coverage of tax-related issues.
UNDP said the objective of the development is a pivotal step towards achieving Zimbabwe’s Vision 2030 and the National Development Strategy 1 (NDS1).
“The campaign aims to educate the public by improving media coverage of tax laws and compliance.
“By educating editors and journalists, the campaign seeks to improve public understanding of tax obligations, reduce tax evasion, and ultimately increase government revenue necessary for funding essential public services and infrastructure projects.”
The campaign kicked off with an editors’ forum on May 28, this year in Bulawayo.
“This forum gathered editors from Bulawayo and surrounding regions such as Gwanda and Gweru. “The event provided a platform for in-depth discussions on tax matters and media engagement.
“It also provided Tax and Customs Education for journalists from June 10-12, in Masvingo.
“The event will feature workshops and training sessions aimed at educating journalists on the intricacies of tax and customs regulations.
“Editors and journalists will be equipped with comprehensive knowledge and skills to report accurately on tax and customs issues.”
The initiative will also enhance media coverage of tax matters, thereby improving public understanding and compliance.
“This will also foster a collaborative relationship between ZIMRA and the media, ensuring consistent and accurate information dissemination.
“Encourage a culture of voluntary tax compliance among the public, reducing reliance on enforcement measures.”
The Taxpayer Education Campaign aligns with Zimbabwe’s Vision 2030 and the SDGs, particularly Goal 16, which emphasizes peace, justice, and strong institutions.
According to UNDP, by improving tax compliance, the campaign supports the creation of a transparent and accountable tax system, essential for sustainable economic growth and development.
