8 Roman Catholic horror accident: President declares national disaster

President Mnangagwa has declared the accident which occurred at Deka Bridge Road in Hwange District, killing eight Roman Catholic members, a national disaster.

The declaration was released by the Minister of Local Government and Public Works, Daniel Garwe.

The declaration follows a tragic road traffic accident that occurred at Deka Bridge in Hwange District, Matabeleland North Province, on May. 23, involving a Toyota Noah vehicle carrying pilgrims travelling from Makwa Roman Catholic Church to Hwange Town.

“Preliminary reports indicate that the vehicle plunged into the Deka River at approximately 6 am, resulting in the death of eight (8) passengers on the spot,while six (6) others sustained injuries.

“The injured are currently receiving treatment at Hwange Colliery Hospital, while the remains of the deceased were conveyed to the same institution pending identification and burial arrangements.

“The declaration of a State of Disaster enables Government to mobilise and coordinate the necessary support and resources required to assist the affected families, facilitate funeral assistance for the deceased, and provide medical support to the injured survivors.

“Government emergency services, led by the Zimbabwe Republic Police and supported by Civil Protection structures, responded swiftly to the scene.

“Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the accident are underway.

“Government extends its deepest condolences to the bereaved families and wishes a speedy recovery to those receiving treatment.

“This tragic incident serves as a reminder to all road users to exercise caution and strictly observe road safety regulations at all times to safeguard lives,” said Minister Garwe in a statement.
