Transport and Infrastructural Development Minister Felix Mhona has appointed a three-member Board of Inquiry to investigate the circumstances surrounding a Rural Infrastructural Development Agency (RIDA) vessel casualty on Lake Kariba on August 11, 2026.
The appointment was made in terms of the Inland Waters Shipping Act, following approval by President Emmerson Mnangagwa.

The board, chaired by Justice J.M. Mafusire, comprises Commissioner Dr W. Makamache and Advocate P. Musarurwa.

It will investigate the causes and circumstances of the incident involving vessel KF551, including compliance with safety standards, registration and certification, operating procedures, and passenger and cargo capacity.
The inquiry is also expected to recommend measures to improve inland water transport safety and prevent similar incidents.
The board is expected to complete its investigations within three months, with a possible one-month extension. Hearings will be held in Kariba.
