Government has ordered the suspension of activities in Lake Kariba from October 4 to 5 to allow Chief Mola and local traditional leadership to conduct a sacred traditional cleansing ceremony on the lake.
The development comes after the capsizing The Mbuya Nehanda, a government-operated passenger ferry managed by the Rural Infrastructure Development Agency (RIDA).
At least 97 people perished while 77 were rescued due to rough waters and strong waves.
In a statement addressed to the Lake Captain, Department of Inland Waters, Nyekete, the Government requested for temporary suspension of activities from October 4 to 5.
“The Office of the District Development Coordinator is requesting a temporary halt to all commercial, passenger and recreational marine activities on Lake Kariba from 4 October to 5 October 2026.
“This temporary suspension is requested to allow Chief Mola and local traditional leadership to conduct a sacred traditional cleansing ceremony on the lake.
“This important cultural rite follows the recent tragic capsizing of the ferry Mbuya Nehanda and is necessary to honor the departed, appease the spirits, and seek calm waters for all future safe navigation.
“Your usual support and cooperation is much appreciated,” said the statement.
