…as Machiri bounces back, given another year extension
The Civil Registry Department has reversed the appointment of B Mpala to the position of Director General to pave way for Henry Machiri whose contract expired on December 31.
The department appointed Mpala on January 1, to the acting position.
Machiri’s term of office expired on December 31, after reportedly reaching his retirement age.
Following the development, Mpala was appointed the acting director with effect from 1 January 2025 until the post is substantively filled.
Below is a memo to Mpala’s appointment:
“Please be advised that you have been appointed to act as Registrar General with effect from 1 January 2025 until the post is substantively filled.
“I wish you all the best in your new assignment and hope that you continue to benefit from the team spirit within the Civil Registry Department and the Ministry at large.”
However, Machiri, is reported to have locked the office last week Thursday and warned that he would be back in five days’ time.
Truth to his word, he has bounced back.
Reports are that Machiri reached retirement age on May 31 2023 and he was given a year extension which ended May 31, last year.
He was further given six more months from June 1 to 31 Dec 2024 written FINAL.
On January 6 he was given another year extension after being called from retirement reversing Mpala’s appointment.
In a new memo dated, January 6, from the Director Human Resources, Machiri will be in charge until December 31, 2025.
Read the memo:
“RE: EXTENSION OF CONTRACT:MR HENTRY MACHIRI: REGISTRAR GENERAL: CIVIL REGISTRY DEPARTMENT: MINISTRY OF HOME AFFAIRS AND CULTURAL HERITAGE
“Reference is made to Secretary for Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage’s minute ref: M4138, dated 06 January 2025.
“Public Service Commission, with the approval of His Excellence, the President of the Republic of Zimbabwe, has extended the tenure of office of Mr Henry T. Machiri from 31 December 2024 to 31 December 2025.
“This cancels the Memo that advised of the appointment of Mr B. Mpala as the Acting Registrar General effective 01 January 2025.”
Mpala was deputy to Machiri.
Reports are that Machiri who was appointed to the registrar general’s position in 2022 reached his retirement and seem to be adamant about leaving office.
He took over from Clemence Masango and had been the Deputy Registrar General before he was appointed acting Registrar General in 2020.
