Jasen Mphepo Little Theatre in collaboration with Shingirai Manyengavana, is set to captivate audiences with its unique blend of poetry and theatre event, ‘Makumi Matatu Spoken Word Poetry Session.
The session is scheduled for November 2, at Jasen Mphepo Little Theatre at 6 pm.
In an interview with the spoken word artist, Shingirai Manyengavana who is also the event curator shared his inspiration and vision for the event.
“Makumi Matatu was born from a desire to blend poetry with the expressive power of theatre.
“Initially, I envisioned a 30-minute poetry session featuring my own work, but as I compiled my poems, I realized I had much more to share.
“This led to the merging of a poetry session with a one-hander play concept that explores themes of teen struggles, mental health, and self-discovery,” explained Shingirai
Shingirai reflected on his life and achievements.
“Makumi Matatu serves as a creative outlet to explore these reflections, presenting them in the form of a one-hander theatre play inspired by poetry.
“Our aim is to create an environment where poetry becomes a tool for reflection and healing,
‘’The theme “Exploring the Unexpressed” was carefully chosen to address the feelings and experiences many people keep hidden due to societal pressures.
“We believe that through poetry and performance, we can dismantle these barriers and foster authentic expression and connection,” said Shingirai
Batsirai Chigama, one of the headlining performers shared her excitement about the event.
“I am excited that poets are organizing events for the public.
“It shows their commitment to the craft and provides a platform to see what others are doing and take notes.”
When asked about the theme “Exploring the Unexpressed,” she noted that
“It speaks to taboo or less talked about issues, addressing truth in various situations—be it political or societal.”
