A 45-year-old man has been jailed after being convicted of raping his 14-year-old niece.
The man, from Chief Marange area in Odzi was arraigned before Mutare Magistrates Court facing two counts of rape.
He was sentenced to 15 years imprisonment on the first count while on the second count, he was found guilty of incest.
He was sentenced to 5 years imprisonment and he will serve an effective 20 years in prison.
The complainant is the accused person’s 14-year-old step-niece.
Sometime in June 2024, the complainant was left at home in the company of her 9-year-old brother when their mother went away.
The accused person took advantage of the absence of their mother and called the complainant to his room to collect some sugar cane.
He instructed the complainant to kneel and take the sugar cane which was under the bed.
He closed the door and ordered the complainant never to reveal what was about to happen, before raping her once.
The complainant went home but did not reveal the matter to anyone.
On the 28th of June 2024, the accused person called the complainant to his house again. The complainant’s mother got back home and found the complainant absent.
Upon inquiry, she found that the complainant was at the accused person’s homestead.
She found the complainant hidden under the accused person’s bed.
She took the complainant home, where the complainant revealed that the accused had had sexual intercourse with her without her consent and had detained her overnight.
A police report was made, leading to the arrest of the accused person.
