Nine people killed during independence holiday

…as 25 injured

NINE people were killed while 25 were injured out of the 100 traffic accidents that occurred during the Independence holiday.

There is a decrease in terms of accidents as compared to last year where 133 accidents were recorded and four died while 22 were injured.

Police confirmed in a statement:

“The Zimbabwe Republic Police recorded the under-listed road traffic accident statistics during the 2024 Independence Day Holiday compared to the same period in 2023.

“The Police did not record major fatal road accidents during this year’s Independence Day holiday.

“A fatal road traffic accident occurred at the 166-kilometer peg along Harare-Bulawayo Road on April 18, at around 1100 hours in which three people were killed whilst one person was injured.

“A Ford Ranger twin cab with three passengers on board veered off the road before overturning and landing on its wheels.

“Another fatal road traffic accident recorded on Independence Day occurred at around 1640 hours and at the 29-kilometre peg along Bulawayo-Beitbridge Road.

“A motorist was killed whilst three passengers were injured when Toyota Granvia vehicle veered off the road to the left, hit the bunker before overturning once and landing on its wheels.”

“A comprehensive analysis by the Police has revealed that most of the accidents are attributed to human error.

“These include speeding, inattention, misjudgment, overtaking error, and failure to observe road rules and regulations, by drivers.
“Sadly, the country recorded an increase in the number of people who died in accidents and several people injured during the Independence Day holiday.

“Motorists and stakeholders are urged to have a total change of mindset when it comes to road safety during holidays.
“Above all, motorists should be responsible on the roads and lead by example when it comes to road safety,” added the statement.
