A Bulawayo man has been jailed for 20 years after he was convicted of raping before robbing his 84-year-old neighbour.
Ndumiso Nyathi, 20, appeared before Bulawayo Magistrates’ Court, where he was sentenced to 23 years’ imprisonment.
According to the National Prosecuting Authority, on July 29 this year, at around 1130 hours, the offender encountered the victim in the bush while she was looking for her cattle.
He struck her on the back of the neck with an unknown object before getting on top of her and forcing her to lie face down.
He then pulled her dress up to cover her face and raped her.
Afterwards, the offender forcibly took US$1,200 from the victim’s wallet and fled from the scene.
The victim narrated what had happened to her neighbour, who alerted other villagers and managed to apprehend the offender at his residence.
A report was subsequently made to the police, leading to the offender’s arrest.
