In Zimbabwe, two businessmen are making waves in the football arena, redefining the sport in ways that go beyond just the pitch.

Sir Wicknell Chivayo and Scott Sakupwanya, though distinct in their approaches, share a common goal, to elevate Zimbabwean football to new heights.

Sir Wicknell Chivayo: The visionary benefactor

Sir Wicknell, a renowned entrepreneur and philanthropist, has long been a pivotal figure in Zimbabwe’s sports sponsorship landscape.

His commitment to football became evident when he began pouring funds into several teams across the country, including the Warriors.

He has also shown support for the national football team, understanding the significance of its success for national pride and unity.

Through these efforts, Wicknell Chivayo has become a recognizable figure in Zimbabwean football, using his influence and resources to foster the growth of the sport in the country.

His contributions not only support the teams but also inspire local talent to pursue football as a viable career.

Wicknell’s philosophy centers on the belief that football can be a catalyst for social change.

By investing in the teams, he has created a platform for young athletes to showcase their skills, potentially leading to careers both locally and abroad.

His sponsorship deals have not only improved team performance but have also become a source of inspiration for aspiring players who now see a glimmer of hope.

One of the teams benefitting from his generosity is one of the oldest in the country, whose resurgence has rekindled local support.

Highlanders FC is the first club to get direct sponsorship from Wicknell.

The revival of fan culture, marked by filled stadiums and electric atmospheres, can partly be attributed to Wicknell’s deep pockets and strategic vision.

Scott Sakupwanya: A Player’s champion

On a parallel path, Scott Sakupwanya has emerged as a transformative figure through his ownership of Scottland FC.

His approach goes beyond conventional sponsorship; he has focused on holistic player welfare, recognising that a happy and healthy player is essential to success on the pitch.

Sakupwanya has instituted policies that prioritise mental health support, nutrition, and education, empowering his players to be more than just athletes.

Under his stewardship, Scottland FC has not only improved its standing in national leagues but has also seen a cultural shift within the club.

Players now have access to professional training sessions and workshops that equip them with life skills, preparing them for futures that may extend beyond football.

This investment in personal development is rapidly changing the perception of footballers within Zimbabwe, who are often stereotyped as merely public entertainers.

Scott Sakupwanya, a Zimbabwean businessman and Member of Parliament, owns at least two football teams in Zimbabwe: Scottland FC, which plays in the Zimbabwe Premier Soccer League (ZPSL), and N’ombeyawora FC which ended up being, FC Hunters after they used the Hunters franchise to play in the PSL while maintaining the name FC Hunters.

In summary, N’ombeyawora secured the promotion spot of FC Hunters through a partnership deal to play in the top-flight, with the team branded as FC Hunters for the 2026 season

Scottland FC gained prominence in 2025, winning the Zimbabwe Premier Soccer League in its maiden season.

Sakupwanya is also known for heavy investment in Zimbabwean football through his company, Betterbrands.

The ripple effect

The combined efforts of Sir Wicknell and Scott Sakupwanya are beginning to reshape the football narrative in Zimbabwe. Their initiatives have sparked a resurgence of interest among sponsors, encouraging more businesses to follow suit. Whether it’s a small local enterprise sponsoring youth leagues or large corporations looking to invest in top-tier teams, the financial landscape of Zimbabwean football is evolving.

Moreover, the influx of funding has led to better talent identification processes, with more youth academies popping up across the nation. Their efforts are fostering a new generation of players who are skillful and well-prepared to take on local and international challenges.

Community engagement

Both businessmen emphasise the importance of community engagement in their projects. Football, especially in Zimbabwe, has a unique ability to bring people together, and Wicknell and Sakupwanya have harnessed this potential.

From charity events to local tournaments, they are not just building teams, they are building communities.

Local fans, once sidelined, are now active participants in the scene, supporting their teams with renewed fervor.

Future prospects

As Zimbabwean football continues to evolve, the contributions of Sir Wicknell Chivayo and Scott Sakupwanya serve as a beacon of hope.

Their investments in the sport are not merely financial; they represent a commitment to nurturing talent, fostering community, and transforming how football is perceived and valued in Zimbabwe.

While challenges remain, such as infrastructural deficits and governance issues, their influence suggests a promising future.

As more businessmen begin to recognise the impact of sports on society, the potential for Zimbabwean football to compete on larger stages becomes more tangible.

In the world of sports, where passion meets business, Sir Wicknell and Scott Sakupwanya are not just shaping football; they are crafting a legacy that could redefine the sport for generations to come.

Their stories will serve as an inspiration, proving that with vision and investment, the beautiful game can indeed change lives.
