Yvonne Matanhire: The Burning Star

Tanyaradzwa Vimbai Mombeshora

Catch Yvonne Matanhire, aka Star, a dynamic Zimbabwean spoken word artist and youth advocate as she performs at the highly anticipated upcoming Das Deck Zeigt Open Mic at Zimbabwe German Society in Harare on August 22.

As her stage name Star, inspired by her being a “night walker”, a “guide” that “burns high”, she has perfected her crat and molded it into a powerful voice and emotive performaning fusion talent.

She is inspiring a new wave of socially conscious youth and pushing the boundaries of what poetry can do.

“Spoken word is poetry with heartbeat. It is raw and unfiltered truth sculpted into rhythm and performed with emotion” says Star, ” For me it is where art and protest shakes hands.

“How I testify, resist and heal, all in one breath.”

Through her advocacy work with platforms like Youth Model Parliament Africa, Magamba Network and Voice2Rep, she’s creating safe spaces for expression and civic education, empowering young people to become informed, expressive, and engaged citizens.

“Magamba helped me realise poetry could be protest, Voice2Rep taught me storytelling is activism especially when rooted from community and Youth Model Parliament Africa made me see myself not just as an artist but a young leader with influence.”

Star looks forward to engaging her audience with her poetry inspired by “subjects of lived experiences, inherited scars and unanswered prayers whispered through bloodline.”

She hopes to leave an impact that mirrors people with similar experiences to feel seen and heard and leave a window for those who have never had such experiences to see through the soul and relate.
