Police have launched investigations into the tragic incident in which a fan died while trying to gain entrance into National Sports Stadium during the match between Zimbabwe and DR Congo.
Reports are that a fan was run over by a police water canon tanker during a stampede and died on the spot.
In a statement, national police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the incident indicating investigations underway.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirms that swift and compressive investigations are currently under way after a fatal incident involving a police public order vehicle and a pedestrian at the National Sports stadium where one person died during a stampede at gate number two at 1830 hours at the beginning of the soccer match between Zimbabwe and Democratic Republic of Congo.
“The Commissioner General of Police expresses his profound condolence to the family of the victim.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police assures the public of objective and compressive investigations to find out exactly what transpired.
“A detailed statement will be issued in due course,” he said.
Before the match, fans had to squeeze each other trying to gain entrance into the stadium, particularly on gate 2.
This resulted in some police details manning the entrances trying to disperse the crowd which was acting in disorderly manner.
In doing so, a fan lost balance resulting in the death.
