Netball players killed in Kadoma road accident

Four mourners have been killed in a road accident near Ingezi Township in Kadoma.

The accident claimed the lives of Fungai Dzomba, Mitchel Kanogwere, 27, Elizabeth Chavhunguma, 39, and Chenesai Chaitezvi, 26, who were travelling from Rimuka Cemetery for a burial procession of a local resident, identified as Girly Mashiri.

They were travelling in a Honda Fit vehicle which was involved in a head-on collision with a D4D Double Cab vehicle near Sichel Service Station at almost the 150 km peg along the Harare-Bulawayo highway.

Three of the deceased died on the spot while Chenesai died at Kadoma General Hospital.

Fungai Dzomba

Police national spokesperson, Commissioner Paul Nyathi, confirmed the incident.

“The accident occurred at the 146 km peg along the Harare-Bulawayo Road.

“A motorist who was driving a Honda Fit carrying seven passengers was involved in a head-on collision with a Toyota Hilux.

“As a result of the collision, the Honda Fit veered off the road, overturned and landed on its roof.

“Two of the four passengers in the Honda Fit who had sustained severe injuries died upon admission at Kadoma General Hospital.”

Sources say three of the deceased were netball players in Kadoma.

Elizabeth was once on the army side, Ngezi Barracks Netball Team.

“She leaves behind two kids, including a five-month-old baby.

“Two of the deceased were playing for Kadoma City Netball Club.”
