Police in Harare arrested a man believed to share the name John Travolta, sparking instant comparisons to the Hollywood actor.
This Travolta wasn’t being searched for red-carpet glamour, he was caught up in a robbery case that struck at Warren Park D Shopping Centre.
According to a police statement, the arrest happened after an incident on 08/08/26, around 1900 hours.
The suspect, police said, and an accomplice who is still at large pounced on a shop with a pistol in hand.
Both men allegedly covered their faces with balaclavas as they threatened the shopkeeper, turning an ordinary evening at the shopping centre into chaos.
“They threatened the shopkeeper and stole US$3 813-00 and ZiG 1 200-00,” police said, adding that the suspects fled the scene immediately after the robbery.”
But the story didn’t end there.
Police said members of the public gave chase, eventually apprehending one of the suspects. Officers later recovered part of the stolen cash during the arrest, including US$1071-00 and ZiG 775-00.
While the “Travolta” with the famous name is in custody, his accomplice remains on the run and investigators are working to bring him in.
