President Mnangagwa declares Triangle bus-train crash national disaster

President Mnangagwa has declared the bus-train crash, which claimed nine lives, a national disaster.

The accident that occurred last Tuesday resulted in 29 others being injured.

In a statement, President Mnangagwa expressed his condolences.

“It is with a profound sense of shock and deep sorrow that I learnt of the horrific collision of a passenger bus and a goods train at a level crossing in Triangle, Chiredzi District on Tuesday, which tragically claimed nine precious lives and left several others injured.

“What makes this incident particularly devastating is the heartbreaking loss of school children, barely a week after we lost seven others in similar tragic circumstances.

“Yet, even in the midst of such immense grief, we find solace in the resilience of the human spirit and the unwavering support we offer each other as a nation.

“To the bereaved families, please accept my deepest, heartfelt condolences on behalf of the Party, ZANU-PF, Government, the people of Zimbabwe, and my own behalf.

“We stand with you in this dark hour, united in our determination to support each other through the darkest of times.

“To those injured and currently hospitalised, I wish you a speedy and full recovery, knowing that hope and care are guiding you towards better days.

“Given the gravity and heartbreaking nature of this incident, I have since directed the government to declare this bloody accident a National Disaster, ensuring that resources are mobilised effectively to support the victims and their families during this painful time.

“Let this declaration be a beacon of hope and support for those in need.”

President Mnangagwa urged road users to be cautious.

“I urge all road users, particularly public transport operators, to exercise extreme caution, adhere strictly to traffic safety regulations, and always stop to check for oncoming trains at all railway level crossings, valuing the preciousness of human life and our collective responsibility to protect it.

“May the souls of the departed rest in eternal peace.”
