Cop, soldier in robbery storm

Two uniformed forces have been arrested after they were involved in a robbery case.

Nico Chambenga Willard,37, a member of the Zimbabwe National Army, and Sergeant Karumbwa Calvin, 45, engineered the robbery while in the company of Clarridge Chihota, 45, Bigboy Doro, Hillary Kadere, 46, and Kimpton Kamutimbe, 31.

Allegations are that on December 6, at around 1 pm and at Watchfield Farm, Mazowe, the accused persons hatched a plan to rob Brian Chitsik,o and they visited the complainant’s shop.

When they arrived, Karumbwa, who is accused 2, produced his police identity card and introduced himself as a detective sergeant.

The complainant was searched in his pockets by Kamutimbe, and one sachet of dagga was recovered.

The complainant fled from the scene, and he was chased and caught by accused 1, who tackled him at a short distance.

Accused 1 assaulted the complainant several times with booted feet and open hands indiscriminately on various parts of the body.

During that time, accused 2 handcuffed the complainant, and they escorted him to the vehicle, which was being driven by accused 4.

During that time, accused 5 was hiding inside the boot whilst accused 3 was seated at the passenger seat.

The accused persons jointly assaulted the complainant and demanded money whilst threatening to open a docket against him.

The complainant told them that he was not in possession of money during that time.

Further allegations are that accused 2 and 3 flanked the complainant while accused 1 was searching him.

He forcibly took US$490 from the inside pocket of the complainant’s short.

Accused 2 removed handcuffs from the complainant’s hands and pushed him out of a moving motor vehicle, and was left near Mutorahuku River in Watchfield Farm, Mazowe.

The complainant then phoned ZRP Mazowe landline reporting the matter which led to the arrest of the accused persons by police officers from Mazowe Traffic who were on traffic enforcement deployment at 40.5 km Harare –Mukumbura Road.

The accused persons were all arrested and escorted to ZRP Mazowe.

The vehicle they were using was also impounded.

Searches were conducted, and US$490 was recovered from accused1’s left shoe.

The handcuffs were recovered from accused 2’s back pocket.

While at the police station, the complainant came and positively identified all the accused persons and their getaway vehicle.

The total value stolen is $490-00 and all was recovered.

The accused persons are detained at ZRP Mazowe Detention Book numbers 1962-1967/25.
