Safe haven for youth counselling established

A new safe haven dedicated to providing counselling and empowerment programmes for young people has been launched at Chigovanyika Shopping Centre in Chitungwiza.

This initiative is part of a broader effort to support girls while addressing issues like drug abuse, early pregnancies, and prostitution in the community.

Spearheaded by the youth-led organisation Teen Rescue Mission (TRM), this initiative promises to have a significant positive impact on the local area. Coinciding with the launch, TRM celebrated the International Day of the Girl Child on October 11, just prior to acquiring the safe house.

During the event, the organisation achieved a notable milestone by collecting over 2,000 sanitary pads, which will be distributed to schools and communities in need, supporting vulnerable girls.

“We are in the process of refurbishing the house, and it will be operational shortly.

“This safe haven will serve as a counseling center for young people grappling with various serious challenges, especially drug and substance abuse.

“We aim to provide vital support to many in need,” shared Matuka.

He also pointed out the rising incidence of suicides among youth, highlighting the urgent mental health issues they face.

“Mental illness in young people is a critical issue. This idea emerged from the youth in our organisation, and I am especially proud that the boys led the sanitary pad drive to assist their sisters.

“Collecting 2,000 pads is an impressive accomplishment, and I commend them for their hard work.”

The event was graced by the Indian Ambassador, Bramha Kumar, who praised TRM for its commitment to supporting the girl child.

“Valuing the girl child means valuing families, communities, and the nation. We are proud to back TRM’s initiatives and look forward to collaborating to protect the girl child, who symbolises the future mothers of tomorrow,” Kumar remarked.

Youth representative Tinashe Mutasa underscored the necessity of valuing and safeguarding girls.

“Every girl has the right to health and education. We, as men and boys, must support them, as the girl child is incredibly important,” he stated.

Faith Alumenda, a former Junior Councillor, expressed her gratitude for the success of the sanitary pad drive.

“As a young girl, I am thrilled that my sisters in need will benefit from these donations. Managing menstruation without sanitary pads is difficult, and I appreciate this initiative for providing essential support.”

Junior Councillor Munashe Ndoro thanked everyone who contributed to the event. “I am overwhelmed by the generous response.

“Our sisters, the girl child, will significantly benefit from these donations. As a boy, I believe it’s crucial to assist our sisters, and I’m excited that this has come to fruition.”

A parent, Chipaure, praised TRM for their program.

“This is an initiative that should occur regularly. Our children need these teachings and gatherings.

“We are pleased to have brought our two boys and one girl, and we are confident this will have a positive impact on their lives.”
