A Mutare man has been jailed 14 years effective after he set his former wife’s house on fire.
The incident occurred in Chimanimani where Zvenyika Gomo (50) committed the crime.
He was brought before Mutare Regional Magistrates’ Court, where he was convicted of attempted murder and malicious damage to property.
The magistrate sentenced him to 10 years for attempted murder before two years were suspended on condition of good behaviour.
He was further sentenced to six years for malicious damage to property, before two years were suspended.
He will serve 12 years effective.
On June 9, 2024, Gomo broke into the house where his 11- and 12-year-old stepdaughters were sleeping.
He sprinkled petrol and set the bedroom ablaze before fleeing.
The girls managed to escape, and neighbours helped extinguish the fire.
The blaze destroyed property worth US$4,500 and US$1,500 in cash.
