Man jailed 54 months for attempting to kill village head

A Gweru man has been jailed for 54 months, effective after he attempted to kill his village head, accusing him of reporting him to the police.

Wellington Dzingisa, 30, appeared before Gweru Magistrates’ Court, where he was sentenced to 54 months in jail for attempted murder and malicious damage to property belonging to his village head.

National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ) proved that on August 7, at around 6 pm, the victim, who resides in the same village when Dzingisai arrived and threatened to kill him.

The offender accused the victim of disrupting his stay in the village by reporting his presence to the police whenever he returned to the area.

Wellington then produced a knife and stabbed the complainant twice in the chest and once in the abdomen.

After the stabbing, he went outside and damaged 14 D11 window panes and the main door before fleeing the scene.

The victim was rushed to hospital, and a report was made to the police, leading to the offender’s arrest.

Property valued at US$210 was damaged, and the offender was sentenced to 84 months’ imprisonment, with 24 months suspended for five years on condition that he does not commit a similar offence during that period.

A further six months were suspended on condition that he restitutes US$210 for the damage to property, leaving an effective sentence of 54 months’ imprisonment.
