From behind prison walls to DreamStar crown: Tinashe Kamunakwenje makes history

By Mutsa Connie Homera

From behind the walls of Harare Central Prison to the brightest stage of Zimbabwe’s talent scene, Tinashe Kamunakwenje has turned an extraordinary journey into a remarkable victory, emerging as the overall winner of DreamStar Zimbabwe Season 10 while also winning the coveted People’s Choice Award.

Kamunakwenje’s triumph at the DreamStar 10th Anniversary Grand Final was more than a victory in a talent competition.

It was a powerful reminder that talent can emerge from the most unexpected places and that a person’s circumstances do not necessarily define the heights they can reach.

While participating in the competition as an inmate, Kamunakwenje managed to progress through the various stages of DreamStar, ultimately earning his place among the finalists and standing on the same stage as some of Zimbabwe’s most promising young performers.

His talent carried him all the way to the top.He was crowned first place, making him the winner of the 10th edition of DreamStar Zimbabwe.

As if that achievement was not enough, the public also threw its weight behind him, voting him the People’s Choice Award. The double victory gave his story greater significance.

His journey is particularly significant because he competed while incarcerated, demonstrating how creative platforms can provide opportunities for people to discover, develop and express their talents regardless of their circumstances.

The man who entered the competition from behind prison walls walked away as DreamStar’s Season 10 champion and the People’s Choice securing two of the night’s biggest honours.

His story is therefore not simply about a trophy.

It is about talent surviving difficult circumstances, opportunity finding its way to unexpected places and an audience choosing to recognise an artist for what he can become rather than where he comes from.

From inmate to finalist, from finalist to champion, and from contestant to the public’s favourite, Tinashe Kamunakwenje’s DreamStar journey has become one of the defining stories of the competition’s 10th anniversary season.

And perhaps most fittingly, as DreamStar marked 10 years with the message that the dream continues, Kamunakwenje gave that message a face, a voice and a victory.
