Tucked just outside Harare, the Mazowe Botanical Reserve is fast becoming a must-visit destination for nature lovers, hikers, and birdwatchers chasing the thrill of miombo woodland.
With sweeping granite views, ancient rock art, and some of Zimbabwe’s most sought-after birds, the reserve offers a wilderness experience less than an hour from the capital.
Managed by local environmental organisation My Trees Trust, the reserve’s mission goes beyond tourism.
The Trust is actively restoring the landscape through indigenous tree planting, protecting the area’s remaining miombo woodlands, and working with surrounding communities to develop sustainable alternatives to deforestation.
A Birder’s Paradise
The reserve is one of the most accessible sites near Harare to experience miombo specials.
Over 150 bird species have been recorded here, including raptors like the black-chested snake eagle and colourful residents such as the green-winged pytilia.
But the star attraction is the spotted creeper.
This elusive, tree-clinging bird is a miombo endemic and a major drawcard for international birders.
Its presence in healthy numbers at Mazowe Botanical Reserve signals the quality of the intact woodland My Trees Trust is protecting.
More Than Just Birds
Visitors can explore hiking trails that wind through granite outcrops and caves, opening to panoramic views of the Mazowe Valley.
The dramatic rock formations frame the landscape, while ancient San rock paintings hidden among the boulders add a cultural layer to the reserve’s natural beauty.
Wildlife sightings include klipspringer, duiker, and the occasional golden orb-web spider spinning its web between trees.

Mazowe Botanical Reserve is open to the public daily from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM. Entry is $2 per person, with proceeds supporting My Trees Trust’s conservation work.
