A gang of five men who terrorised the Murewa district for years while masquerading as military personnel has finally come to an end.
The Murewa Magistrates’ Court has handed down a combined sentence of 81 years for a string of violent armed robberies.
Gang members, Charles Munyaradzi Dokotera (42) and including Mayor Sibanda (34), Bothwell Kamwendo (39), Donald Travolta Matunhu (28), and Colonel Madzima (24), were convicted on 9 counts of armed robbery.
The group operated with military precision, wearing full army uniforms and wielding an arsenal that included shotguns, pistols, revolvers and sjamboks to intimidate and assault victims.
They were arrested on April, 22 last year after their getaway vehicle suffered a tyre puncture during a chase by a brave mob.
Police investigations led to the recovery of a massive cache of stolen goods and weapons hidden near the Shavanhohwe River.
The offenders were sentenced to an effective 44 years behind bars after a portion of the sentence was suspended.
