\u201cReintegration is a word we love to use in policy documents. Out here, in the real world, it doesn\u2019t exist the way we imagine it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Those words land like a gavel when Kudzai Nyoka says them.<\/p>\n

And coming from someone who has walked the path from conviction to release, they carry a weight that no policy brief ever could.<\/p>\n

A door that never fully opens<\/strong><\/p>\n

Nyoka\u2019s message is simple and brutal: the day you walk out of prison is not the day your sentence ends.<\/p>\n

It is the day a second, invisible sentence begins one with no release date. \u201cPeople think reintegration means you serve your time, you come out, you rebuild,\u201d Nyoka says.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut the conviction doesn\u2019t stay behind those walls. It follows you into every interview room, every rental application, every background check for the rest of your life.\u201d<\/p>\n

It is a sentence measured not in months or years, but in decades, sometimes in the rest of a person\u2019s life.<\/p>\n

The job that was never really available <\/strong><\/p>\n

Ask Nyoka about employment and the frustration is immediate and unfiltered.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou can have the skills.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou can have the discipline.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou can have changed completely as a person. None of that matters the moment an employer sees the tick box, the criminal record check, the gap in your CV that nobody wants explained,\u201d Nyoka explains.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey don\u2019t reject you to your face.<\/p>\n

They just never call back.\u201d<\/p>\n

This, Nyoka argues, is the cruelest irony of the justice system: society demands rehabilitation, then builds a wall specifically designed to punish those who achieve it.<\/p>\n

The Digital Ghost You Can Never Outrun, but it is the next issue that Nyoka calls \u201cthe modern shackle,\u201d one that didn\u2019t even exist a generation ago.<\/p>\n

\u201cPrison used to end at the gate. Now it follows you online forever,\u201d Nyoka says.<\/p>\n

\u201cCourt records, news archives, mugshot websites they don\u2019t disappear.<\/p>\n

They don\u2019t fade with good behaviour. Someone can Google your name a decade later and find the worst day of your life, permanently pinned to the top of the search results.\u201d<\/p>\n

In an age where a name search can make or break a job offer, a lease, or a relationship, Nyoka describes this digital footprint as a punishment with no expiry date one imposed not by any court, but by algorithms with no concept of mercy or time served.<\/p>\n

Better said than done <\/strong><\/p>\n

Nyoka\u2019s most pointed critique is reserved for the language of policy itself. \u201cReintegration\u2019 sounds wonderful on a government pamphlet,\u201d Nyoka says.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt photographs well at a press conference. But it is easier said than done much easier.<\/p>\n

\u201cSaying the word costs nothing. Living the reality costs everything: your dignity, your opportunities, sometimes your will to keep trying.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u00a0A call for honesty, not slogans<\/strong><\/p>\n

Nyoka isn\u2019t asking for sympathy; the request is far more pointed than that.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not asking anyone to feel sorry for us. I\u2019m asking the system to stop pretending it has solved something it hasn\u2019t even started fixing,\u201d Nyoka says.<\/p>\n

\u201cReal reintegration means real jobs, real expungement laws, real digital erasure after time is served. Anything less is just a nicer word for permanent exclusion.\u201d<\/p>\n

As the conversation ends, Nyoka leaves one final line hanging in the air the kind that lingers long after the newspaper page is turned.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou serve your sentence once.<\/p>\n

\u201cSociety makes you serve it every single day after, for the rest of your life.\u201d<\/p>\n
