<\/p>\nPolice have warned motorcyclists to abide by the law that they should ride with protective helmets.<\/p>\n
This comes after the police noted a significant increase in the use of motorcycles in both urban and rural setups, with some riders operating unregistered motorcycles.<\/p>\n
The motorcyclists are also riding without protective helmets and, in certain instances, moving around without valid driver’s licences or learner’s licences while carrying more than one passenger.<\/p>\n

In a statement, police national spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said they have observed poor riding conduct by some motorcyclists.<\/p>\n
\u201cPolice have noted ignoring road signs and signals, reckless and dangerous riding, excessive speed, improper overtaking, riding against the flow of traffic and weaving through moving vehicles.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis conduct poses a serious risk to the safety of the rider, passengers, pedestrians and other road users.<\/p>\n
\u201cMotorcyclists are reminded that the Road Traffic Act [Chapter 13:11] and its associated regulations require both the rider and passenger to wear approved protective helmets at all times when operating or riding on a motorcycle, regardless of whether the area is rural, farming, peri-urban or urban.<\/p>\n
\u201cRiders operating motorcycles on a learner’s licence or other drivers licence other than Category A (class three), are further reminded that the protective helmet must be clearly inscribed with a red letter “L” at the back, in addition to the motorcycle displaying the prescribed L-plates, as required by law.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Police emphasise that a motorcycle is only permitted to carry one passenger, who must be properly seated and wearing a protective helmet.\u201d<\/p>\n
Commissioner Nyathi, further said, motorcycles must be properly registered and licensed.<\/p>\n
\u201cAny deviation from these requirements constitutes a traffic offence and attracts penalties in terms of the law.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Zimbabwe Republic Police will continue to intensify traffic enforcement operations countrywide to curb lawlessness and promote road safety.<\/p>\n
\u201cMotorcyclists and all road users are urged to adhere to road rules and regulations, cooperate with law enforcement officers and prioritize their safety.\u201d<\/p>\n
