{"id":3895,"date":"2025-09-29T09:21:52","date_gmt":"2025-09-29T09:21:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/zimdailyjournal.co.zw\/?p=3895"},"modified":"2025-09-29T09:21:52","modified_gmt":"2025-09-29T09:21:52","slug":"businesses-fail-when-they-fail-to-support-women-interests-in-zimbabwe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/zimdailyjournal.co.zw\/index.php\/2025\/09\/29\/businesses-fail-when-they-fail-to-support-women-interests-in-zimbabwe\/","title":{"rendered":"Businesses Fail when they Fail to Support Women Interests in Zimbabwe"},"content":{"rendered":"<p dir=\"ltr\">By\u00a0Professor Myriam Sidibe<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Amid predictions of Africa\u2019s growth and the potential of its youth, one inconvenient statistic tells a different story.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Africa has the highest rate of femicide worldwide [2.9 victims per 100,000 in 2023] &#8211; around 22,000 women and girls are killed every year by an intimate partner or family member.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">I spend a lot of time tackling this inexcusable epidemic through the organisations, brands, and companies I work with.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">This week, I am at the United Nations General Assembly in New York, trying to keep this overlooked issue on the agenda.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The single most powerful accelerator for Africa\u2019s progress is not another flashy tech or mining infrastructure project; it is the autonomy of our girls and women.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Quite simply, we make it too hard for a girl to become a woman. Until we confront this, we limit our potential.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">According to the UN Africa Women publication, \u2018Ending Violence Against Women\u2019, Violence against women continues to be a pervasive human rights abuse in Zimbabwe.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The 2019 Multiple Indicators Cluster Survey shows that 39 percent women reported being physically abused since 15, and 12 percent between 15-49 years had experienced sexual violence with Intimate Partner Violence being the most dominant form.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">How can we build the continent and workforce of the future while 1 in 3 schoolgirls miss school monthly because of their period?<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Across sub-Saharan Africa, 55 percent of girls face the monthly fear of people seeing their menstrual blood.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">We cannot be squeamish about this; it\u2019s a fact of life. Period. Millions of girls and women are menstruating\u00a0right now.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">They need acceptance, education and products to manage it. How can businesses and society claim \u2018inclusive growth\u2019 when half our population\u2019s needs are systematically ignored?<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">There is silence around safe sex in most African schoolrooms. Women risk violence for seeking contraception.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Safe abortion is a taboo topic. Unplanned pregnancy causes thousands of deaths each year. Yet despite the evidence, governments underfund it, communities stigmatise it, and businesses shy away from it.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The result? Preventable pain and suffering; preventable losses in productivity and growth. Where would Africa be without its women?<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Businesses have huge influence across the media and plough millions into marketing their brands to women and families yet remain silent \u2013 scared and squeamish &#8211; on sexual and reproductive health.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">To me, it\u2019s bad business. Women grow Africa\u2019s economies as both consumers and entrepreneurs.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Their unmet health needs are unmet business opportunities.<\/p>\n<p>The private sector has the creativity and influence to act differently.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">We see glimpses of this affordable sanitary product innovations designed for low-income communities, confidential access to contraception and counselling through telehealth platforms, and the taboo-breaking campaigns from unlikely brands from soap to beer showing that what is good for women is good for business and society.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The lesson is simple: when companies put women\u2019s needs at the heart of their strategy, they don\u2019t just sell more products \u2013 they earn trust, loyalty, and long-term growth.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">I make the case for this in my recent global <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=EGM-b1bhqkY&amp;t=40s&amp;pp=ygUbcHJvZmVzc29yIG15cmlhbSBzaWRpYmUgdGVk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v%3DEGM-b1bhqkY%26t%3D40s%26pp%3DygUbcHJvZmVzc29yIG15cmlhbSBzaWRpYmUgdGVk&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1759218574041000&amp;usg=AOvVaw0RA5fuZ2lGCGw1axPx6dAf\">TED Talk<\/a>\u00a0and call for a new kind of business leadership.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">I mean someone using their influence to change cultural norms, to\u00a0stand up\u00a0for those they sell to.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Normalising periods, contraception, and sexual health through education, product design and campaigns that dismantle barriers and break taboos.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Let\u2019s stop whispering about women\u2019s bodies and start designing for them.<\/p>\n<p>This is not philanthropy.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">It\u2019s smart, strategic and inclusive growth. Because the inconvenient truth is, you cannot build strong markets on the backs of disempowered women.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Africa\u2019s girls and women form half of this magnificent continent: half of its potential workforce and its most powerful consumers.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Governments, philanthropists, and businesses must join forces for and with women \u2013 not because it\u2019s \u2018nice to do\u2019, but because it\u2019s the most impactful unlock for an unstoppable Africa.<\/p>\n<p>Until then, every promise about Africa\u2019s future is just empty words.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Will leaders continue to tiptoe around women\u2019s health, or will they step up to drive the change our continent needs?<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong>Professor Myriam Sidibe, an expert of
