{"id":2151,"date":"2024-12-02T15:19:03","date_gmt":"2024-12-02T15:19:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/zimdailyjournal.co.zw\/?p=2151"},"modified":"2024-12-14T21:50:52","modified_gmt":"2024-12-14T21:50:52","slug":"climate-resilient-livelihoods-project-fostering-safe-communities-for-women-children","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/zimdailyjournal.co.zw\/index.php\/2024\/12\/02\/climate-resilient-livelihoods-project-fostering-safe-communities-for-women-children\/","title":{"rendered":"Climate resilient livelihoods project fostering safe communities for women, children"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Harare, December 2, 2024.\u2013\u00a0<\/em><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), in collaboration with the Government of Zimbabwe and the Green Climate Fund (GCF), has pronounced a transformative impact of the Climate Resilient Livelihoods (CRL) Project in Foroma Village, Chipinge District.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This groundbreaking initiative is not only combating the adverse effects of climate change but also addressing gender-based violence (GBV) by creating sustainable and supportive livelihoods.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Headman Mandamugiyo, a respected traditional leader in the community, recalls a time when two out of every five cases in his traditional court involved GBV, primarily fueled by bread-and-butter issues. Reflecting on the transformation, he shared,<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe introduction of savings groups has provided my community, especially couples, with an opportunity to earn their own income, which has been essential in reducing domestic conflicts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The CRL Project has introduced\u00a0<strong>Village Savings and Lending (VS&amp;L) Groups<\/strong>, enabling community members to save and access low-interest loans to fund agricultural and entrepreneurial activities.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These groups have provided a lifeline for families like that of Lucia Mashava, a 48-year-old resident.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lucia expressed her gratitude, stating,<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIn my 29 years of marriage, I have never enjoyed spending time with my family as much as I do now. Arguments over money and food are a thing of the past.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Similarly, Taurai Mbambu, another community member, highlighted the project\u2019s impact on his mental health and family life.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Initially skeptical, Taurai joined a VS&amp;L group after witnessing his wife\u2019s success.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhen we meet as groups, we discuss not only finances but also strategies for resolving conflicts peacefully.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;This project has significantly changed our lives and behavior,\u201d he remarked.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beyond VS&amp;L groups, the CRL Project is equipping farmers with tools and knowledge to adopt\u00a0<strong>climate-resilient agricultural practices<\/strong>, enhancing food security and incomes. Investments in bee apiaries further provide a sustainable source of income while promoting biodiversity.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Project Manager Mr. Rungano Benza emphasized,<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe CRL Project is more than a climate initiative; it\u2019s a community transformation effort. By addressing livelihoods, we\u2019re reducing GBV and fostering harmony.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Looking to the future, Headman Mandamugiyo envisions a thriving, peaceful community, united in purpose.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis project has given people meaningful activities, leaving little time for disagreements.
